Can adopting the daily habits of successful entrepreneurs really change your business?
It seems like everywhere you look these days there’s another blog post or Youtube video about habits: whether that’s entrepreneurship rituals, the million dollar morning routine or a list of 30 things you absolutely MUST DO every single day to be successful.
While I read some of these pieces, I started thinking about my own habits and those of other successful entrepreneurs, including my clients and peers in this industry. I wanted to dig deeper than their instagrammable morning routine to find out which habits had the biggest impact on their business.
In the end, I boiled it down to a list of the top 12 daily habits of successful entrepreneurs. These habits will not only increase your productivity, but also help you grow your business faster and become the boss babe CEO you were meant to be. So let’s dive in!
Keep reading or watch the video below on the top 12 daily habits of successful entrepreneurs.
Before we begin…
One thing to remember before we jump into this list of the daily habits of successful entrepreneurs, is that the word success is subjective. It means something different to each entrepreneur.
Rather than reflecting a certain “benchmark” of success, this list represents some of the commonalities between entrepreneurs who rise to the top–business owners who know how to get sh*t done and are on the top of their game. These 12 habits are the tools they used to get there!
Habit #1: Plan ahead and use a calendar.
This might seem obvious, but success doesn’t just happen! Nine times out of ten, it’s the result of some serious advance planning.
Whether or not you identify as a planner or an organized person, if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, this is a habit you need to adopt. I personally follow the weekly and monthly routine outlined in this post, and use ClickUp to manage my team and workflow (watch my video on how to use ClickUp here).
You don’t have to follow someone else’s exact planning rouine, but you do need to find an approach that works for you. Getting organized will free up your headspace and mental energy so you can concentrate on what matters–like actually growing your business!
First things first: You have to know your goal. Otherwise, how will you achieve it?
Successful entrepreneurs always have a clear goal in mind that they’re working towards. They know what they want, and they go get it. If you’re chasing some vague definition of success, or trying to balance competing priorities, you’ll end up running in circles.
Success requires clarity and focused action. If your vision for your business changes (and it will!), then simply take a step back, reevaluate, and get clear on your new goals.
Habit #3: Self-discipline.
One of the most important habits of successful entrepreneurs is the ability to get work done without external accountability. As a business owner, you don’t have a boss or manager to report to–the only person you’re responsible to is yourself.
You need to be willing to do the hard work, and have the discipline to sit down and get it done.
What this comes down to is choosing growth over comfort. Sitting down to do the work, even when you don’t feel like it, is uncomfortable. Putting yourself out there and reaching out to new clients is uncomfortable. Successful entrepreneurs are willing to live with that discomfort, because ultimately growing their business is more important.
What are you willing to sacrifice to get what you want?
Habit #4: Take action consistently.
There’s a reason I made this list the 12 Daily Habits of Successful Entrepreneurs–not weekly or monthly! If you want to be successful in business (or anything in life), consistency is key.
As an entrepreneur, you’re never going to have all the answers. You’re never going to feel 100% ready or prepared. But you have to develop the habit of taking action anyway, not once or twice, but over and over again! Taking action consistently is the only way to guarantee progress.
Successful entrepreneurs exude confidence. This doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but instead is a habit and practice you need to be intentional about cultivating.
Being confident will help you make the decisions you need to make to grow your business. When things get hard or that fear starts to creep in, believing in yourself and your business is what will keep you going.
Successful entrepreneurs know there is never a point when you stop learning. Whether that means attending a virtual retreat, hiring a coach, or taking an online course, there is always something new to be learned.
Even now, running a near million dollar business, I continue to invest in myself and my education. Not only do I love learning new skills, but it’s absolutely crucial to growing my business. When you stop learning, you and your business stop growing.
Habit #7: Be willing to be vulnerable.
To achieve success, you have to be willing to take massive risks. Starting a business is a risk. Investing thousands of dollars in a coaching program is a risk. But those are also the things that are going to push your business forward and bring you one step closer to your dreams.
Successful entrepreneurs are willing to make those scary decisions, not just once, but consistently. They make vulnerability a habit.
Habit #8: Separate emotion from action.
This is something I’ve seen across the board when it comes to daily habits of successful entrepreneurs. You need to be able to separate the action you’re taking from whatever emotion you’re feeling in that moment.
Whenever people ask me how I get so much done everyday, or how they can be more productive, my answer is the same: Do not let your emotions dictate your actions. If I’ve decided I’m going to map out a module for a new course on Thursday, and I wake up that day and I’m not feeling it–I do it anyway!
Again this comes back to self-discipline. If something needs to get done, then you need to separate how you’re feeling from your work. That doesn’t mean you should neglect your health or never take breaks, but it’s helpful to get into the habit of separating emotion from action.
Habit #9: Prioritize exercise and health.
When it comes to the daily habits of successful entrepreneurs, exercise is often one of the first non-negotiable habits. We all know that movement and nutrition are good for us, but sometimes we underestimate what regular exercise can do for our business.
Not only does working out improve your brain function, but it also boosts creativity and energy, both of which are essential for entrepreneurs. So the next time you’re feeling sluggish or tired, get up and get moving!
As entrepreneurs, there will inevitably be circumstances outside of our control (like a market crash, a miserable client, or even a global pandemic). The thing to remember is that while you can’t control the feelings or actions of others, you can control your mindset. You can choose to focus on the things that are within your power.
This mindset also applies to accountability; you can’t rely on others to keep you accountable. Ultimately, it’s your business and YOU are the only one responsible for your success.
Habit #11: Patience.
New entrepreneurs often feel a burst of motivation when they first start their business. They’re excited to get going, to make it happen, and put in all the hours…but they don’t see results. Weeks and months pass, and it feels like they’re getting nowhere.
Of course we all want to see success right away. In the digital world, we’re used to instant gratification. But the reality is, it takes time for a new business to pick up traction.
Successful entrepreneurs know that you need to put your head down and keep doing the work, even when there are no visible results. Because if you keep working, those results will come! Patience and consistency are key.
Habit #12: Financial responsibility.
Finance is often left off the list of habits of successful entrepreneurs, but this is absolutely a necessity! Having a handle on your finances is crucial to running any business, and especially online businesses, which often have multiple streams of income.
You need to know your numbers (your expenses, profit, taxes, etc.), and it’s easier to get started while your business is new than try to play catch up down the line. Click below to watch my video that will walk you through my bookkeeping process step by step.
