I’m getting philosophical AF guys… What is normal? And could you change yours?
“Our perceptions determine what we are and are not capable of – in many ways they determine reality when we believe in the obstacle more than the goal.”
– Ryan Holiday
What do you honestly believe you are capable of?
If you’re anything like me, you grew up being taught that you needed to pass a test, get a piece of paper, or work years for a promotion to tell you what you are capable of. But what if you could do something else? What if you could start from a blank slate and choose any path you could dream of? What if in this moment right now you already knew that what you needed to be capable was already inside you? What would you do?… Scary, isn’t it?
When I was at school, at college, in my corporate job, the idea of building my very own six-figure business would have sounded insane. When you throw in worldwide travel, palm tree offices and nothing to bootstrap but a flourishing social media following… well, I’d have got you locked up! In the States, what I do is not normal… and I realize that everytime I visit ‘home’. There’s a world of white picket fences, volleyball teams and 9-5’s that exists without me. It doesn’t even recognize that I exist.
But in Bali? In Bali it’s normal to spend your entire day with entrepreneurs. It’s normal to talk about a 5-figure launch or your plans to pop over to Thailand for the weekend. It’s normal for me because my perception has changed. My perception of what’s possible is totally different from what it was even a few years or months ago. Now, this lifestyle isn’t just normal, it’s my baseline (my ground-zero, if you’ve caught that training).
Perception can both kill and cure us – it depends on what is subjectively considered normal around you. If you’re surrounded by a ‘normal’ that doesn’t work for you, it can be exhausting, confusing and depressing. How many entrepreneurs have told you that they carved this path for themselves because they burnt out in corporate? That’s because that perception of ‘normal’ wasn’t right for them, they craved a new normal.
In reality, changing your normal is not hard – you start with your perception. In fact, throw your perception of normal in the trash RIGHT NOW! If you want to change your life, change up your normal, then it’s easy
1. Change your mindset
Stop thinking that change is hard, that business is hard, or whatever it is you’re telling yourself that’s holding you back. It starts in the mind, the rest will always follow. To anything new, you first have to believe it’s possible.
2. Allow for limitless possibilities
If you aren’t willing to open the door, to take the first step, how can you ever know what you’re capable of? Unless you actually try, fail, fall in the dirt and get back up, how do you know you’ve tried at all? Say ‘yes’ to the thing. Book the flight. Buy the course. Just do something!
3. Change your habits and environment
Pretend that no one ever told you how your life had to be. What would you do right now? What would you change? Start integrating those things into your life. Whether that’s honing a new skill, teaching yourself a system or developing high performance habits. Switch up your routine, work in a different way, go against the grain and see what happens.
4. Take action
Be unashamed and fearless in the action you take. If your finger is hovering over your resignation letter, that plane ticket you really want to buy or that email that says YES to a huge opportunity… I want you to close your eyes and DO IT! Fear is the apprehension of doing something for the first time. Don’t want to feel fear? Do the scary thing… then do it again!
Are you ready for change? Do you want to switch up your perception and live a truly limitless life? Well, HIGH FIVE! You’re so welcome here!
