One of the best things about living a digital nomad lifestyle is the ability to travel. Sometimes that means settling down in one place for a month or two…and sometimes that means taking a week to explore Iceland’s Ring Road in a camper van! 

This summer, we moved from America to Greece and decided to stop in Iceland along the way (Because why not, right? One of the many perks of a digital nomad lifestyle). We spent one week traveling Iceland’s Ring Road by camper van–living, working, eating and sleeping in our van and at various campsites along the road.

One of the most common questions I get about our digital nomad lifestyle is how I manage my business while traveling full time. This post will show you two things:

1. Our itinerary around the Ring Road
2. How I managed working and road tripping at the same time–all while exploring Iceland’s best sights and incredible natural beauty.

Iceland’s Ring Road by Camper Van: Our 7 Day Itinerary 

Day 1: Reykjavik → Selfoss

Arriving this morning at Reykjavik International Airport, we wasted no time hitting the road! After a quick stop to pick up our van, groceries and supplies, we started the Golden Circle route. Along the way, we stopped at Pingvellir National Park, Strokkur geysir and Gulfoss waterfall, before spending the night at Selfoss camping.

Tip: Use a portable wifi router to stay connected while traveling. Ours was able to connect to five different devices, so you can use it on your phone for directions as well.

Every night, our van was transformed into a fold out bed. This meant moving all of our luggage to the front seats so we had room to sleep comfortably. We cooked dinner on a fold out stove in the back of the van, and used the campsite facilities to shower (don’t worry, there’s hot water!).

Tip: Organizing and setting up the van is a longer process than you might think. Always leave yourself extra time for cooking, showering, etc. Every morning, we spent around 2 hours just converting the van back from sleeping to driving mode.

Day 2: Selfoss → Vik

On day two we were still adjusting to the time change, so we slept in and did a little work in the morning. We visited two stunning waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi), and got soaked in the process!

Our next stop was Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with stunning basalt columns, before turning in for the night at a campsite in Vik.

Tip: Despite visiting in summertime, the weather in Iceland was cold and wet–make sure you pack lots of layers!

Day 3: Vik → Skaftafell

Digital Nomad Lifestyle Tips: Working on the Road

Sometimes people forget that work is part of the digital nomad lifestyle, too (although I’d take Iceland mountain views over an office any day!). Day three was our first working day on the road. Starting bright and early at 7:00 am, we set up shop in the dining area of our campsite and knocked out about 3-4 hours of work. 

Since it was a Monday, I started by checking in with all of my clients and catching up with my team. I reviewed one of our Youtube videos, outlined two upcoming Mastermind calls and did some work with my OBM on our internal systems.

Mondays are my “CEO Day”, because I have a fairly large team. If you’re a solopreneur, your digital nomad lifestyle will look a bit different. You might be working on content creation, client work, or marketing tasks. 

Iceland is pretty off the grid compared to some other digital nomad destinations, but our campground in Vik had a nice indoor dining space and they even had their own wifi! 

Sightseeing

In the afternoon, we visited Fjaðrárgljúfur (don’t ask me how to pronounce this!), a breathtaking canyon that was created during the Last Ice Age. Next up was Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Our last stop of our day was Diamond Beach, which gets its name from the washed up icebergs that cause it to sparkle in the sunlight.

We cooked dinner in our van and spent the night at Skaftafell Camping, which ended up being our favorite campsite!

Tip: We brought a cooler but found it difficult to stock up on ice, so make sure you know where groceries stores are in advance (we found one about every two days). And make sure to stock up on snacks/non-perishables!

Day 4: Skaftafell → Hengifoss

I worked for a few hours this morning to review all the prepwork my team had done for our upcoming launch (graphics, emails, etc.), all while sipping my coffee and taking in the beautiful views. 

Tip: Not every campground has indoor seating, and the weather in Iceland can be unpredictable. I don’t mind working in the car, and luckily my partner likes driving, so that worked for us! But don’t plan on working outside everyday. 

Then in the afternoon it was time for our glacier hike with Troll Expeditions, which was easily one of the highlights of our trip! (Note: this link is not sponsored, we just highly recommend them!)

Day 5: Hengifoss → Myvatn

This was one of our busier work days. We camped at and worked from Hengifoss Guesthouse for a few hours in the morning, before hitting the road to see Hengifoss waterfall. Next were the beautiful Myvatn Nature Baths, where we bathed in bright blue water, naturally heated by hot springs. 

In my opinion Myvatn Nature Baths were definitely cool and worth a visit if you are up in that area, but the Blue Lagoon lives up to its reputation and is way cooler.

Day 6: Myvatn → Camping at Sæberg HI Hostel

Our first stop today was Námaskarð, also known as the “martian landscape” of Iceland. This narrow pass is filled with geothermal wonders, including steam vents and sulfuric hot springs (yes, the sulfur makes it smell like rotten eggs, but it’s worth it!).

We stopped at Goðafoss waterfall before heading out to Dolvik for a whale watching tour. Make sure you watch the video here to see the amazing footage! 

Our campsite for the night was Sæberg HI Hostel, which had an indoor dining area where we could cook and work, and it even had a hot tub!

Tip: During the summer months, the sun doesn’t set in Iceland until very late, and even then it’s still fairly bright out. Bring eye masks to get a good night’s sleep!

Day 7: Camping at Sæberg HI Hostel → Vogar

Today we visited Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, Skarðsvík Beach and Svörtuloft Lighthouse. Lóndrangar view point was our last stop before spending the night at Vogar Campsite. 

Day 8: Vogar → Reykjavik

The famous Blue Lagoon was one of our last stops, where we soaked in mineral water and DIY’d facials before heading back to Reykjavik.
